Get fired up for the 8th Annual Philadelphia International Dragon Boat Festival. Soak in the Festival action along Kelly Drive in Philadelphia and watch teams paddle down the Schuylkill River.

Support for Cancer Research

By choosing Fox Chase Cancer Center as your designated charity, you can help support cancer research. It's easy to do. Simply support a paddler who is fundraising for Fox Chase. Each paddler has a goal of collecting $100 in pledges. Or, if you prefer, general donations to Fox Chase also are welcomed.

Since the first event in 2002, participants and supporters have raised more than $1 million for Fox Chase through the Dragon Boat Festival. We appreciate your incredible spirit and energy.

Basics of Dragon Boating

Rooted in 2000 years of Chinese tradition, dragon boat racing has become the fastest-growing water sport in the world. The key lies in the team's ability to move in unison, combining strength and teamwork. Within the ornate boat is a crew of 20 paddlers, one drummer and a steersperson. A perfectly synchronized team will almost always beat a stronger, less coordinated team.

Festival Success

This year, more than 140 teams will compete in this event, the largest festival of its kind in North America. Teams race along a 500-meter course in multiple races of 8 teams each. They include community and business groups from near and far with paddlers of all fitness levels and ages, from students to senior citizens.

Fox Chase Teams

Many teams race in support of Fox Chase Cancer Center. Among them are 2 teams made up of Fox Chase employees. They include:

• The Foxdragons - Paddling for the 6th year, this team includes mainly nurses from Fox Chase's outpatient department. Joining them are members of the rehabilitation department, phlebotomy, one of the hospital nursing units, a postdoctoral associate and family and friends. Co-captains are nurses Ginny Martin and Jessie Schol.
• RAD ONC DownUnder - A group of co-workers from Fox Chase's radiation oncology department formed this team along with their families and friends. They are paddling for the 5th year and want to thank all those who support them both emotionally and financially.
