Philadelphia, PA 19106
Fox Chase Cancer Center designates this educational activity for a maximum of 7 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™.
STATEMENT OF NEED
Evolving medical, surgical, radiation and diagnostic advances continue to expand our ability to
diagnose, evaluate, stage and treat thoracic cancers and improve patient outcomes. New
chemotherapeutic options are emerging. New ways to use existing agents are available. New
tests for identifying patients who will respond to specific therapies are promising. Combined
modality treatment approaches are demonstrating effectiveness. Minimally invasive procedures
for diagnosing and treating thoracic malignancies and less invasive ways of evaluating and staging
mediastinal lymph nodes can result in more accurate staging, reduced morbidity and improved
response to treatment for these patients.
This conference is designed as a forum for discussion of advances in thoracic oncology that will
help oncologists, surgeons, pulmonologists, gastroenterologists and primary care physicians
evaluate and recommend appropriate strategies for managing patients with advanced-stage and
locally advanced NSCLC, esophageal cancer and mesothelioma and enhance physicians’ ability to
counsel their patients about available treatments. There will be ample time for participants to ask
questions and interact with the speakers. Participants are encouraged to submit interesting cases
for discussion.

OBJECTIVES
After completing this activity, participants should be able to:
- Assess advanced NSCLC patients to differentiate between those who should be managed with observation and long-term follow-up, those who should receive standard chemotherapy and when new tests should be ordered to identify patients who will benefit from individualized therapies.
- Compare the data from ongoing and more recent studies to identify patients with locally advanced NSCLC who will benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy.
- Evaluate the effect of postoperative radiation therapy on the survival of patients with locally advanced NSCLC.
- Assess the benefits of using minimally invasive procedures to diagnose, stage, evaluate and treat NSCLC, esophageal cancer and mesothelioma, to reduce complications and speed recovery in these patients.
- Assess new chemotherapeutic agents and combinations to improve response in the treatment of patients with esophageal cancer.
- Analyze the benefits of PET scans in documenting response to combined modality treatment and determining appropriate treatment approaches for patients with esophageal cancer.
- Apply new strategies for optimizing existing treatments of known active agents in the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma.
- Analyze the criteria for determining when it is appropriate to refer Stage III A lung cancer and mesothelioma patients for surgery, surgical evaluation or surgical staging.
- Counsel patients about new medical, surgical and radiation options for evaluating and managing advanced-stage and locally advanced NSCLC, esophageal cancer and mesothelioma.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This program is designed for Medical and Radiation Oncologists, General and Thoracic Surgeons,
Pulmonologists, Gastroenterologists, Internists, Family and General Physicians involved in the
