The Gloria and Edmund M. Dunn Chair in Thoracic Surgical Oncology

Established in 2002 by Edmund M. Dunn and his late wife Gloria, this chair was created to honor and support an outstanding leader in the fields of lung cancer research and thoracic surgical oncology who represents the highest standards of excellence.

Walter J. Scott is the Division Chief of Thoracic Surgery and the Director for minimally invasive lung cancer surgery at Fox Chase Cancer Center. He has dedicated his surgical career to treating cancers that involve the chest, including lung, esophageal, mediastinal tumors, Pancoast tumors, tumors of the chest wall, and other thoracic cancers. Dr. Scott has specialized in minimally invasive techniques, including video-assisted lobectomy and robotic surgery, and was the first surgeon in the Delaware Valley to investigate the use of ultrasound bronchoscopy to evaluate lymph nodes in the chest, a procedure that can potentially reduce the need for invasive surgery.

As a Division Chief, Dr. Scott directs the research efforts of division members in developing new clinical research studies and advancing new technologies. He has been the principal investigator or co-investigator of a number of national and international clinical trials, and has also authored and coauthored numerous scientific articles, presentations, and a book for patients and families entitled, "Lung Cancer! A Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment."

Dr. Scott earned his BS at the University of Houston in 1977. He earned his MD at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 1981. From 1981 until 1987, he stayed on at the University of Chicago while serving his General Surgery Residency. This was followed by his Cardiothoracic Residency from 1987 until 1989. In 2009, Dr. Scott was named as one of Philadelphia Magazine's "Top Docs" in the field of thoracic surgery.
