The chair was established in 2011 by Mrs. Dorrance Hamilton and named for her husband, honoring his more than 40 years as a devoted Fox Chase citizen. He first joined the American Oncologic Hospital board in 1957 and went on to serve on the Fox Chase Cancer Center board from 1978 until his death in 1997. This chair recognizes and supports an outstanding leader in cancer science and medicine who represents the highest standards of excellence.

Dr. Paul F. Engstrom, who joined Fox Chase in 1970, has devoted his professional and academic career to improving cancer prevention and early detection research and service.

He established the first Cancer Prevention and Control Program in an NCI-designated cancer center at Fox Chase in 1979. Twelve years later, he established a highly successful and ongoing training and career development program that has groomed national leaders in cancer prevention and control research.

He has been the principal investigator for numerous cancer prevention and screening research programs, including the Early Detection Research Network focused on breast and ovarian cancer screening and diagnosis (2005-2015).

Dr. Engstrom has served as an advisor on some of the most influential cancer prevention and screening boards. These include the American Cancer Society, Philadelphia Division; the National American Cancer Society; the American Association of Cancer Institutes; the American Society of Clinical Oncology; and the National Cancer Institute.

Dr. Engstrom has over 160 peer-reviewed scientific articles devoted to cancer prevention and screening research. He has served on the Editorial Board for Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, Journal of Cancer Prevention, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Primary Care and Cancer, Clinical Cancer Research, and currently is Senior Editor for Cancer Prevention Research.

He has been an advocate for cancer prevention and screening programs in research throughout the U.S. and around the globe. He is the founding member for the American Russian Cancer Alliance which was instrumental in leading the Russian Duma and the Blokhin Russian National Cancer Center to pass legislation controlling cigarette sales, smoking restrictions, and smoking cessation programs in Russia.

He is a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Patient Guideline Committee.  He is a worldwide spokesperson for the national guidelines to screen, diagnose, manage, and support cancer patients.

In 2009, Dr. Engstrom received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Cancer Society for his myriad contributions to cancer control and prevention. He was recognized for Distinguished Achievement by the American Society of Preventive Oncology in 2010. And he is consistently cited as a “Top Doc” by Philadelphia Magazine, most recently in 2011.
