NIH Public Access Compliance at FCCC

About NIH Public Access Policy

This mandate ensures that NIH funded research is available, free of cost, to the public. All investigators who receive NIH funding must deposit, upon acceptance for publication, an electronic version of their final peer-reviewed manuscript (including graphs and supplemental materials). Manuscripts must be available to the public within 12 months of publication.

The Library's Role in the Process

Library staff will assist you by advising you on next steps, walking you through the submission process, and answering questions. We are working with the Office of Sponsored Research to ensure FCCC's compliance with the mandate. Please contact library staff at 215.728.2711 or at lib_reference@fccc.edu for assistance.

How do I comply with the mandate?

When your manuscript is accepted for publication you will need to

  • address copyright by making sure your agreement with the publisher allows for posting to PubMed Central.
  • submit your manuscript to NIH (steps are outlined below).
  • cite the paper with the PMCID number when you submit an application, proposal, or progress report to the NIH.

I need to submit a manuscript to NIH . Now what?

Step 1: Check to see if you have to deposit the article or if the publisher will do it for you.
Use the Journal "Deposit" or "No Deposit List" as a guide or visit Journal that Submit Final Published Articles (NIH)

Step 2: If the publisher deposits the manuscript, you're done (you may have to approve the PDF). If you are responsible for initiating deposit, go to the NIH Manuscript Submission System and proceed to Step 3.

Step 3: Log in and follow the prompts through the process. Tutorials are available. You will receive an email when the web version is ready to approve.

I'm not the corresponding author. What do I do?

First, check the PMID:PMCID converter to verify the number hasn't been assigned. If you don't have access to the final peer-reviewed manuscript, try contacting the corresponding author. You may use this letter as a template. Anyone can complete the submission process and if the manuscript has been deposited, you will be alerted.

I need to acknowledge grant funding. How do I do that?

This document, developed by the Office of Sponsored Research, provides the wording necessary to properly acknowledge grant funding. If you've used any of these facilities, you must acknowledge the Core Grant.

It's really important to acknowledge both the Core Grant and CCSG facilities in your manuscript. Publishers who initiate the deposit on your behalf look for evidence of NIH funding to know what should be sent to the NIHMS. It takes less time and energy to include these acknowledgments in your initial manuscript than it does to make a paper compliant after publication.

Need help?

Sometimes, your manuscript and submission process won't follow the steps above. Call the library at 215.728.2711 or email us at Lib_Reference@fccc.edu. We can help you through the process.
