U.S. News & World Report� Names Fox Chase Cancer Center Top Cancer Hospital in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware

PHILADELPHIA (August 3, 1998) -- For the fourth consecutive year, Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia was named the top cancer treatment hospital in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey by U.S. News & World Report�:, according to the magazine's annual ranking of hospitals. The ninth edition "America's Best Hospitals" appeared on newsstands on July 20.

The list, published annually, ranks hospitals based on an index that indicates overall quality of care. The intent of this edition is to assist people seeking the highest level of skills in diagnosing, treating or managing a medical condition. The ranking procedure is the only effort that subjects 6,400 hospitals to this level of scrutiny. The 1998 "America's Best Hospitals" publication assesses care for 16 specialties at 1,985 hospitals nationwide, 132 of which scored high enough to be ranked. According to the U.S. News & World Report(r) methodology report, any institution listed among the top 42 medical centers in any specialty should be considered a leading center. Fox Chase ranked number twelve in the nation and first in the Delaware Valley region among the 42 hospitals named for cancer care.

Fox Chase Cancer Center is one of 34 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the nation. The Center's activities include basic and clinical research; prevention, detection and treatment of cancer, and community outreach programs.
