Fox Chase Cancer Center and Brazilian Hospital Agree to Partner Expertise

PHILADELPHIA (October 19, 1999) -- Leaders from Fox Chase Cancer Center and Hospital do Cancer/Fundac�o Antonio Prudente in S�o Paulo, Brazil have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, laying the foundation for cooperation to identify specific opportunities and initiatives.� Such opportunities would include cooperative programs in research, education, clinical expertise and business opportunities.

The main goals of the partnership will be to:

  1. develop oncology specific clinical and research educational training programs;
  2. implement advanced systems for clinical trial management that enhance reporting, bio-statistics and development of study designs;
  3. collaborate on research projects in the fields of basic and population science;
  4. and seek joint business ventures.

"This is a unique opportunity, bringing together two of the world's elite cancer research institutions," said Robert C. Young, M.D., president of Fox Chase.� "The result of this type of collaboration is the sharing of valuable research information.� This relationship could escalate our efforts to better understand cancer, especially in the areas of prevention and treatment."

The Memorandum of Understanding is solely used as the beginning of an expansion of ideas and discussions between the Hospital do Cancer/Fundac�o Antonio Prudente and Fox Chase Cancer Center.

Strategic implementations will be facilitated by Philadelphia International Medicine (PIM) with full recognition by Hospital do Cancer that PIM is Fox Chase's international business development partner.

Fox Chase is a founding member of PIM, a consortium of the area's elite institutions.� PIM links Greater Philadelphia's nationally recognized hospitals with leading physicians and medical technology to make comprehensive, quality healthcare available to patients in the international community.

Fox Chase Cancer Center is one of 36 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the nation.� The Center's activities include basic and clinical research including prevention, detection and treatment of cancer, and community outreach programs.
