Fox Chase Cancer Center Benefits from "Saturday in the Park"
PHILADELPHIA (December 17, 1999) -- Fox Chase Cancer Center received $35,000 in contributions, raised in part at "Saturday in the Park." The event, sponsored by Willow Grove Bank and underwritten by the Willow Grove Foundation, turned out more than 500 people for food, drink and musical entertainment by The Fabulous Greaseband.
"Our foundation has been very impressed by the enthusiasm at Fox Chase Cancer Center for cancer prevention initiatives," said Charles F. Kremp, III, president of Kremp Florist in Willow Grove and chairman of the Willow Grove Foundation.
"We are grateful for the Willow Grove Foundation's generosity, especially as Fox Chase gets ready to open the world's first cancer Prevention Pavilion early next year," said Sandra W. Weckesser, Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Fox Chase. "This new building will bring together prevention research, risk assessment programs, clinical trials and other cancer prevention activities all under one roof."
The Willow Grove Foundation was formed in 1998 to enhance the bank's opportunities for giving in the community. Seven volunteer directors manage the Foundation's activities.
Willow Grove Bank President Fred Marcell stated that the bank has a long history of realizing a sense of responsibility toward its community. Approximately 60 employees of the bank are involved in more than 180 activities to benefit the communities they serve, particularly Eastern Montgomery County. Through its "community enrichment program," the bank has donated more than $500,000 over the last three years. The philosophy has been "we work here, we live here, we should give back," Marcell explained.
Fox Chase Cancer Center is one of 37 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the nation. The Center's activities include basic and clinical research; prevention, detection and treatment of cancer; and community outreach programs.
