State Representative Dwight Evans Elected to Fox Chase Cancer Center Board
PHILADELPHIA (Sept. 18, 2000) -- The Honorable Dwight Evans of Philadelphia's West Oak Lane section, a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives since 1981, has been named to the board of directors of Fox Chase Cancer Center.Evans will serve on the board's extramural activities committee. It focuses on the Center's relationships with its Fox Chase Network of community hospitals in Pennsylvania and New Jersey; its role as a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network; and other collaborative efforts.
"As one of the nation's leading comprehensive cancer center, Fox Chase is a resource not only for Philadelphia but for the entire state," said Rep. Evans. "Part of the mission of Fox Chase is to reach beyond its walls to extend its expertise to health professionals and the public in the tri-state area, which is the goal of Fox Chase Network.
"I am especially pleased with the Center's initiative in establishing the country's first comprehensive research effort in cancer prevention and a variety of programs designed to help healthy people prevent cancer, which are also being offered through Network hospitals."
Evans has been chairman of the Democratic Appropriations Committee in the House since 1991. As such, he is minority chair of the House Appropriations Committee and also serves on the Rules Committee.
He was educated at Germantown High School, Community College of Philadelphia and La Salle College.
Fox Chase Cancer Center, one of the nation's first comprehensive cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Institute in 1974, conducts basic and clinical research; programs of prevention, detection and treatment of cancer; and community outreach.
