Local Students Sell Lollipops to "Help Lick Cancer"

PHILADELPHIA (October 3, 2000) -- North Penn High School sophomore Kristin Zanoni and Pennbrook Middle School freshman Erica Schaffel presented a check for $500 to Fox Chase Cancer Center on Oct. 2, 2000 on behalf of Pennbrook Middle School's Student Council. The campaign to raise money called "Help Lick Cancer" started last spring at Pennbrook and continued this fall at North Penn.

Zanoni, Schaffel and their classmates sold 1,000 lollipops donated by area grocery stores for 50 cents each. Zanoni said she wrote letters to local grocery stores including ACME, Weiss Markets, Target, Costco and Genuardi's to get the lollipops donated. A gift tag was attached to each lollipop that was sold so students could purchase and give them as gifts.

Fox Chase Cancer Center executive vice president Don Leedy accepted the $500 check. Zanoni said the student council chose cancer as its fundraising project because everyone is affected by cancer. Her mother, Linda Zanoni, works at Fox Chase.
