Fox Chase Cancer Center Mentors Host Student "Shadows" For a Day

PHILADELPHIA (November 17, 2000) -- Students from Frankford High School in Northeast Philadelphia spent the day at Fox Chase Cancer Center as part of the seventh annual Shadowing Day. A group of ninth-graders "shadowed" their employee mentors through the workday to explore different careers and learn from professional role models.

While at Fox Chase, students learned about nursing, construction and engineering, and computer graphics. Some observed while many others actively participated in the daily work activities of the Center.

Thousands of ninth grade students from Philadelphia high schools participated in this citywide event, supported by the School District of Philadelphia, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and One to One-The Greater Philadelphia Mentoring Partnership.� Students visited all types of businesses including hospitals, nursing homes, law firms, banks and small businesses.

Fox Chase Cancer Center, one of the nation's first comprehensive cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Institute in 1974, conducts basic and clinical research; programs of prevention, detection and treatment of cancer; and community outreach.
