Fox Chase Cancer Center's Sigurdson Promoted to Senior Member

PHILADELPHIA�(October 23, 2000) -- Dr. Elin R. Sigurdson of xx, PA, has been promoted to senior member in the Department of Surgical Oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center.

Sigurdson is the director of surgical research and is a pioneer in the use of sentinel lymph node biopsy, which spares breast cancer patients of unnecessary surgery. Also successful for melamona, lymphatic mapping allows surgeons to identify the first, or sentinel, node which is then to determine whether cancer has spread.�� If negative, no other nodes need to be removed allowing patients to avoid complications due to removal such as lymphedema.

Dr. Sigurdson is a graduate of the University of Toronto Medical School, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where she was an intern and a resident in general surgery.� She later became a research and clinical fellow at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York City.� She is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Temple University Medical School.

Board certified by the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada) she is also certified by the American College of Surgery.� Dr. Sigurdson holds memberships in many professional societies, including the American Radium Society, Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, Association of Women Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, and the American Society of Colon and Rectal surgeons, among others.
