Tour De France Model Racing Bike Presented to Winner; Raffle Proceeds Benefit Fox Chase Cancer Center

George Merkel, scientific assistant at Fox Chase Cancer Center, is the lucky winner of a Lance Armstrong autographed 2001 Tour de France model-racing bike. Merkel, (pictured) was presented with the bike in late June by Sandi Weckesser, president of Institutional Advancement at Fox Chase. The bike generated over $1,612 through raffle sales at Fox Chase's 14th annual Pedal for Prevention Bike Ride and Walk.
U.S. Post Master General, Frank Brennan and former Fox Chase employee Liz Kerr, donated the bike to Fox Chase. Armstrong is part of the U.S. Postal Services Team. The Pedal for Prevention Ride had raised $14,106 for cancer prevention research at Fox Chase this year alone and over $200,000 since its first event in 1990.
Fox Chase Cancer Center was founded in 1904 in Philadelphia as the nation's first cancer hospital. In 1974, Fox Chase became one of the first institutions designated as a National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center. Fox Chase conducts basic, clinical, population and translational research; programs of prevention, detection and treatment of cancer; and community outreach. For more information about Fox Chase activities, visit the Center's web site at www.fccc.edu.
