Fox Chase Cancer Center Nursing Department Develops Council for Diversity Recruitment

PHILADELPHIA (May 24, 2006) - Fox Chase Cancer Center's nursing department has formed a council for diversity recruitment, an effort to formalize a long existing effort. The council was developed to help recruit and retain a competent professional nursing staff from diverse populations.

The council for diversity recruitment will meet four to six times a year. The goals of the council are to promote awareness in the community that Fox Chase values diversity, educate diverse populations about opportunities in professional nursing, provide a forum for creation and maintenance of a positive work environment and support opportunities for professional staff to connect with diverse communities through outreach.

"Nursing, as a profession, is not representative of the population we serve. As an example, men comprise only 5.7 percent of our nursing population. The membership of our council promotes to diverse groups that nursing is an excellent career choice and a rewarding profession. It also represents Fox Chase Cancer Center's commitment to diverse staff," says Mickey Mullin, RN, BSN, OCN, nursing career specialist at Fox Chase Cancer Center.
