Genuardi's Markets Raises $131,000 for Breast Cancer Research

PHILADELPHIA (Nov. 16, 2007) — Genuardi's Markets, a division of Safeway Inc., teamed up with Fox Chase Cancer Center during the month of October and raised $131,000 for breast cancer research programs at the Center. Fox Chase was designated as one of two recipients to benefit from Genuardi's October fundraising campaign. During the month, Genuardi's reached out to employees and customers through in-store activities to help raise money for the fight against breast cancer.

"Corporate partnerships like these are very important to our institution," said V. Craig Jordan, OBE, Ph.D., D.Sc., vice president and scientific director for medical science and Alfred G Knudson Jr. Chair in Cancer Research. "The money raised by this effort will help enhance the breast cancer research programs at our Center and ultimately assist with fighting this disease."

Jordan, known as the "father" of the breast cancer drug tamoxifen, is one of the top 20 most-cited breast cancer researchers over the past decade. He was the first scientist to demonstrate tamoxifen's ability to prevent breast cancer in laboratory rats. He also was instrumental in the development of the estrogen-modulating compound raloxifene, originally approved for osteoporosis is postmenopausal women.

With a Department of Defense grant for a Breast Cancer Center of Excellence, Jordan's laboratory is working to develop a new treatment model for breast cancer to reverse the eventual development of resistance to anti-estrogen therapy. The goal of the program is to bring new treatments from the laboratory to stage I and II clinical trials, making new breast cancer drugs available sooner.

Over the past six years, Safeway's annual breast cancer campaign has raised more than $25 million - $8.3 million in 2006 alone - to fund major cancer research programs at major research institutions and hospitals in North America.
