Fox Chase Cancer Center Adds Neuro-Oncologist Morrison to Medical Oncology Staff
PHILADELPHIA (Feb. 21, 2008)-Neuro-oncologist Tara Morrison, M.D., of Cherry Hill, N.J., is the newest addition to Fox Chase Cancer Center's medical oncology staff. A fellow of Canada's Royal College of Physicians, she has been an assistant professor of neurology at Drexel University College of Medicine and director of the Brain and Spinal Tumor Center at Hahnemann University Hospital since 2004. Since 2005, she also served on the staff of Cancer Treatment Centers of America's Eastern Regional Medical Center in Philadelphia.
"The biggest thing for me is to provide comprehensive care to patient s and their families," Morrison said. "The diagnosis of a brain tumor is a devastating moment in their lives, and I want them to know that I will be there for them. I am always open to questions. I will take as long as they need to answer their concerns."
"My philosophy is to provide top quality patient care both to improve the length of a patient's life and also the quality of life," she added. "That is critical in my eyes."
Morrison received her undergraduate degree in biochemistry summa cum laude and her medical degree with honors at the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. She then held an internship in preliminary internal medicine and completed her residency in neurology at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minn. Mayo Medical Students cited her for excellence in clinical neurology teaching.
"Neuro-oncology, to me, encompasses not only those patients with the devastating brain tumors but also those other patients with cancer who have neurologic problems, either as a result of their cancer itself or as a result of the necessary treatments they are receiving," Morrison explained. "Diagnosing and helping their oncologists identify the origins of these problems and reducing their impact on the cancer patients quality of life is another aspect of my job I enjoy."
Morrison completed a fellowship in neuropathology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and fellowships in neuro-oncology and general neurology at the University of Toronto's Division of Neurology, Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre.
She is a co-author of several research papers and has made numerous research presentations.
