PHILADELPHIA (August 15, 2023) — Fox Chase Cancer Center is pleased to welcome Rebecca M. Shulman, MD, as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology. Shulman recently concluded her residency training in radiation oncology at Fox Chase, serving for one year as chief resident.
A graduate of New York University, Shulman received her medical degree from the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, where she was appointed student representative to the Diversity Council and the Office of Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
Drawing on her Hispanic background and her fluency in Spanish, she co-chaired the Latino Medical Student Association at Temple and introduced several educational programs aimed at improving the healthcare of underserved patients, including an elective and a certification course in medical Spanish.
Her contributions to the medical school and her academic achievements were recognized by election to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. As a postgraduate, she was admitted to the prestigious Harvard Macy Program, which provides specialized instruction for a select group of aspiring academic clinician-educators.
Her research at Fox Chase has focused on improved approaches to breast cancer therapy and has included studies of the effect of BRCA1 mutations on tumor radiosensitivity and the use of novel combinations of immunotherapy and radiotherapy in animal models.
She is the recipient of numerous grants, including the ASTRO-BCRF Emerging Investigator Award, the Conquer Cancer Foundation ASCO Young Investigator Award, the Rita R. Holman Breast Cancer Foundation Annual Research Award, the LUNGevity Health Equity and Inclusiveness Research Fellow Award, the In Vino Vita Young Investigator Award, and an AACR-AstraZeneca Clinical Immuno-Oncology Research Training Fellowship.
She is also a recipient of the Robert A. Winn Diversity in Clinical Trials: Career Development Award, which is given in support of promising investigators to initiate and conduct clinical trials that support the recruitment of underrepresented patients.
Her research has been published in the Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, the International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics, the Annals of Surgical Oncology, and other professional forums.
In addition to her clinical and research work, Shulman remains active in medical outreach, serving recently as radiation oncology curriculum coordinator for Rayos Contra Cancer, a multi-institutional nonprofit seeking to improve cancer treatment in low-resource regions around the globe.
Shulman began her tenure at Fox Chase on August 1.
