PHILADELPHIA (December 14, 2023) — Zoe Landau, MPH, Project Manager in the lab of Linda Fleisher, PhD, MPH, a Research Professor in the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program at Fox Chase Cancer Center, was recently recognized with the Best Professional Poster Award at the 2023 International Cancer Education Conference (ICEC) for her work detailing the mychoice digital health tool.

“It’s been very exciting to work on this project. This has been my first experience in the design of digital health tools, and it has been very meaningful to see how much of a say patients get in these interventions,” said Landau, who won first place in the Practices category for her poster.

Mychoice is an online educational tool designed to promote shared decision making between providers and patients who are considering clinical trials as a treatment option. Although it was the subject of a randomized, controlled trial and user testing and has been well received by patients and providers, the lab continues to evaluate the implementation of mychoice in diverse clinical settings.

“Mychoice has been in development in Dr. Fleisher’s lab for nearly a decade, and over the two years I’ve been with Fox Chase it has been one of my primary projects. I completed many of the user-testing interviews last year one-on-one with Fox Chase patients and had a direct role in the subsequent redesign of the tool,” said Landau.

Patients were asked questions to evaluate what information they found most or least helpful, what other features they would like mychoice to have, and what questions they still had after reviewing the tool. Data was then collected and coded to find recurring themes.

The tool was then adjusted based on patient feedback in collaboration with a web developer. Landau’s abstract and poster detailed the feedback received from patients during user testing and how it shaped the most recent version of mychoice.

The poster, “Guiding Digital Health Tool Adaptation Through In-Depth User Testing Interviews: The Mychoice Experience,” was presented at the 2023 ICEC, which was held October 3-6 in Toronto.

The ICEC, which was organized by the American Association for Cancer Education, the Cancer Patient Education Network, and the European Association for Cancer Education, seeks to provide learning opportunities to oncology professionals who educate people as part of their practice. This year’s conference included over 210 patients, oncologists, educators, and other healthcare professionals.
