Delaware County Regional Cancer Center, Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania
The Delaware County Regional Cancer Center, located at Delaware County Memorial Hospital (DCMH), offers a full spectrum of preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic and follow-up programs related to cancer. The Cancer Center is a member of the Association of Community Cancer Centers and is accredited by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.
The Cancer Center offers a broad spectrum of services, including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgical services, educational services, Positively You (a personal appearance enhancement center), and other support services designed to meet the ongoing needs of cancer patients and their families.
The Delaware County Regional Cancer Center offers area residents the most advanced therapies as well as a multidisciplinary approach to the fight against cancer:
- Research: In addition to participating in trials generated by Fox Chase Cancer Center, the Cancer Center participates in studies coordinated by several national cancer research groups, including the Eastern Cooperative Onocology Group (ECOG) and the Radiotherapy Oncology Group (RTOG).
- Diagnosis: DCMH specialists use a range of methods to diagnose cancer, such as surgical biopsies as well as cross-sectional imaging, including PET/CT, and breast imaging techniques. Breast imaging techniques include digital mammography, needle localizations, ultrasound-guided breast biopsies, sentinel node mapping, stereotactic biopsies and MRI. Other radiologic imaging technologies such as fluoroscopy, CT, ultrasound and nuclear medicine.
- Medical Oncology: DCMH medical oncologists utilize a variety of approaches - including chemotherapy, immunotherapy and hormonal therapy - in the treatment of cancer.
- Radiation Oncology: Radiation oncology at the Cancer Center incorporates the latest available technologies and techniques, including robotic radiosurgery (through Philadelphia CyberKnife in Havertown), low-dose-rate brachytherapy, IMRT, IGRT, dual-linear accelerators, and 3-D treatment planning.. Philadelphia CyberKnife, the most experienced CyberKnife center in the Delaware Valley, is a department of Delaware County Memorial Hospital.
- Surgical Oncology: DCMH surgical oncologists offer a full range of services, including diagnostic, treatment, adjunctive, and palliative procedures. They also use the most advance techniques, such as laparoscopic procedures, cryoablation, and robotic surgery using the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System at Springfield Hospital. Reconstructive surgery is also available.
- The Center for Breast Health at DCMH is dedicated to detecting and treating breast disease and breast cancer. Led by Linda S. Callans, MD, the Center for Breast Health is unique because it was created for women who are treated by women - who understand a woman's needs. A Breast Health Navigator can help patients to access the Cancer Center's comprehensive breast health services.
- Other services: Also available to patients at the Cancer Center are such services as home care/hospice, pain management, nutritional counseling, integrative care, social work, support groups, screenings and prevention services. A genetic counseling program is available to help assess an individual's cancer risk factors in order to develop a strategy for lowering the risk of cancer.
