Gary M Freedman, MD

After my internship, I decided to enter the field of cancer therapy in memory of my relatives that faced and ultimately succumbed to this disease. Following my residency in radiation oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center, I joined the staff.
As a radiation oncologist who specializes in breast cancer, my role is to combine the latest in radiation technology with the results of clinical research--an evidence-based approach to medicine that is flexible enough to assist the individual woman seeking treatment. I take the time needed to explain modern cancer treatment, answer questions and help patients and their families understand so that they can be a part of important decision-making. In short, I need to be a compassionate human being first, a physician second and specialist in radiation third.
In my position as director for breast cancer radiation therapy, I was the principal investigator of a novel clinical trial of IMRT, hypofractionation and an incorporated boost for early stage breast cancer. I serve as principal investigator for ongoing clinical trials of partial breast irradiation with 3D-conformal radiation and the MammoSite brachytherapy system as well as overseeing our comprehensive breast cancer clinical database. I have had the opportunity to present my research findings at national oncology meetings and have been published in peer-reviewed and international medical journals.
