Karon Martyn, MSN, ANP-BC, AOCNP
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a nurse. Growing up in a family full of nurses helped me understand the commitment and knowledge that this occupation requires. I followed my aspirations to Penn State University, where I graduated with a Bachelors of Science in nursing in 1998. I was truly inspired by an amazing Professor in my undergraduate program, and I knew that I wanted to advance my degree. As I settled into married life and parenthood, I also pursued and successfully achieved my Master’s degree as an Adult Nurse Practitioner from LaSalle University.
My career here at Fox Chase Cancer Center began during my senior year of undergraduate nursing school, working as a nurse extern on a medical/surgical unit. I knew right away that I enjoyed working with the oncology population, and after graduation, I continued to work on the same medical/surgical unit as a staff nurse. I further continued my career in the infusion room and clinic in the outpatient department. It was in the infusion room that I gained a strong knowledge base of all aspects of chemotherapy. As I graduated with my Master’s degree in 2008 as an Adult Nurse Practitioner, the infusion room had a strong need for an advanced practice clinician that would be readily available for symptom management. My background and degree fit this need perfectly, and I started working in the newly created role of Nurse Practitioner, Infusion Services in November of 2008.
I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to provide care to those in need, and my role allows me to be readily available to symptomatic patients suffering from treatment related side effects, working with a multidisciplinary team, and collaborating with both the medical oncology department and infusion room staff. My position is both challenging and rewarding, and I feel that I have a unique opportunity to help ease the burden of this disease. I’m proud to work at Fox Chase Cancer Center, and have always felt that the care we provide to patients is truly individualized. I’m fortunate to work with a strong team of nurses and clinicians, and truly cannot imagine working in any other institution.
