Andre A Konski, MD, MBA, MA
I joined Fox Chase's radiation oncology department in 2002. After completing my fellowship, I pursued an MBA and MA in economics. Together, this experience has helped prepare me for my new role as chief medical officer of Fox Chase Cancer Center Partners.
In this role, I look forward to expanding the ability of Fox Chase and its community hospital partners to deliver high quality care to our region. It is important to me that our patients have access to the latest advances in cancer care, treatment and research. To make this happen, I plan to work closely with our partner hospitals to create a balance between clinical services delivered at Fox Chase and those provided at our affiliates.
As a radiation oncologist, I work closely with my colleagues from medical and surgical oncology to develop the most appropriate and most effective treatment plan for each patient. At Fox Chase, we have access to the most sophisticated tools, including 3-dimensional conformal therapy and 4-dimensional CT scans to account for organ motion, which spares normal tissue from the effects of radiation therapy. We were the first hospital in the region to integrate Positron emission tomography (PET Scan) with the treatment planning CT Scan for patients with esophageal and rectal cancer. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is the most advanced external beam radiotherapy available. We use IMRT to treat more patients than anywhere else in the region.
In my practice, many patients are not exactly sure how radiation therapy works and therefore have many questions. I believe in educating my patients before they begin treatment. I am always happy to answer their questions to help them understand what to expect from therapy. I also believe that patients and their families should be actively involved in devising the treatment plan. Treatment should be individualized to each patient, taking into account the medical appropriateness of treatment as well as family and patient desires.
One of the reasons I chose to join the staff at Fox Chase is to participate in important cancer research. It is a key part of what I do. As the principal investigator of many Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) studies, we evaluate new treatments to improve patient outcomes. We have found that combination treatment (radiation therapy and chemotherapy) has proven to be more effective against the cancer, results in fewer complications, reduces recurrence rates, and is a more cost-effective approach.
