I joined the staff of Fox Chase Cancer Center in 2001 not only because it is one of the top cancer centers in the country, but also because of the unique environment we are provided as anesthesiologists. Our staff works closely with the surgical oncologists and nursing staff to ensure patient safety and comfort before, during and after surgery.
However, our role is not limited to just providing pain relief during surgery. Anesthesiologists are sometimes considered "perioperative physicians," meaning we provide medical care to our patients throughout the surgical experience.
At Fox Chase, we provide medical evaluations prior to surgery, consult with the surgical team and provide pain control and support of life functions during surgery. Finally, we manage our patients' care following surgery and are responsible for discharging our patients from recovery. I understand that most cancer patients deal with pain management issues throughout treatment, so it is very important that we understand their needs in order to provide them with the most comfort.
I believe that proper assessment of a patient's pain and measurement of quality of life are crucial to appreciating the efficacy of a treatment regimen.
At Fox Chase, we are conducting research studies for anesthesia in cancer patients. The results are factored into treatment plans to improve quality of life at various stages of the disease.
