I have been a staff gastroenterologist at Fox Chase Cancer Center since 2008. My area of focus is advanced endoscopic procedures. Some examples of the procedures I perform include the removal of precancerous polyps and growths from the gastrointestinal tract via endoscopy, thereby avoiding the need for surgery.
Barrett’s esophagus, a condition that predisposes patients to a much higher than average risk of esophageal cancer, can be cured with endoscopic technology such as radiofrequency ablation of the abnormal tissue. Endoscopic ultrasound has a critical role in the diagnosis and staging of cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, guiding my medical and surgical colleagues in their selection of the best treatment plan for each patient. An advanced endoscopy called ERCP gives us the ability to place stents in the biliary tract and pancreas for the treatment of jaundice associated with certain tumors.
At Fox Chase we also perform a specialized procedure called double balloon enteroscopy or DBE, which enables us to examine areas deep within the small bowel which are not accessible to standard endoscopes. In doing so, we can treat areas of bleeding that would otherwise require frequent blood transfusions or even surgery, and diagnose tumors of the small bowel at an early, curable stage.
Although technology is a vital part of what I do, there is nothing more important in the practice of medicine than the human interaction between health care provider and patient. At Fox Chase we strive to do the best we can for our patients every day.
