The program staff includes medical oncologists, gastroenterologists, genetic counselors, health educators, and a variety of clinical and basic scientists. These Fox Chase scientists are working to determine the causes of gastrointestinal cancer, ways to prevent it and the best screening methods to detect cancers and pre-cancerous conditions early.

You can contribute to this research simply by giving a small blood sample and completing a questionnaire as part of our registry for high-risk people. You may also have the option of participating in various cancer prevention studies as they become available. Late diagnosis is responsible for the high death rates from these cancers. Regular screening is important. These cancers are curable if detected early.

"Hereditary" forms of cancer have become an important area of cancer risk counseling. Ideally, cancer risk counseling will involve all members of a family. Unfortunately, many times our family members live in many different areas across the country. This is why the Fox Chase Cancer Center has created the Internet Risk Assessment Program (IRAP). We have developed an internet/computer program to help families that live throughout the country receive cancer risk counseling. This is done through use of a computer and the internet.

For more information about the Gastrointestinal Tumor Risk Assessment Program and to learn if you are eligible to contribute to our research studies, please call us at (215)-728-7041 or send a message.
