Risk Assessment at Fox Chase Cancer Center

Cancer prevention and early detection begins with knowing your cancer risk; then, doing something about it. Regular screening may help detect cancer at its earliest stages when the chance of a cure is highest.

Part of the Keystone Program in Personalized Risk and Prevention

Department of Clinical Genetics

The Department of Clinical Genetics is built on the success of Fox Chase's Margaret Dyson Family Risk Assessment Program, which Dr. Mary Daly began in 1991 for individuals with a family history of breast and/or ovarian cancer, women who have had breast or ovarian cancer, or a biopsy showing benign breast disease.  The program was one of the first such programs in the nation to offer screening, education, and counseling to healthy people at increased genetic risk for disease. Since 1991, Fox Chase has developed additional risk assessment programs in melanoma, gastrointestinal and prostate cancers.

The Department of Clinical Genetics is closely aligned with ongoing research initiatives in Fox Chase's Cancer Prevention and Control Program, as well as its Keystone Program in Personalized Risk and Prevention, a collaborative translational science program co-led by Daly and funded through philanthropic donations to Fox Chase.

At Fox Chase Cancer Center, cancer prevention is a top priority. Cancer screening and cancer prevention research is a key part of providing comprehensive cancer care.

Fox Chase offers cancer risk assessment for healthy people at increased risk of certain types of cancers due to personal or family history.

Our physicians and healthcare professionals provide cancer screening, prevention, education and support programs to corporations and community organizations through our Community Education and Screening programs.

Programs and Resources

Fox Chase Cancer Center offers a number of cancer prevention resources, including programs for those at increased risk for certain types of cancer.

Biosample Repository - Established in 1999, this facility is dedicated to the collection and distribution of human subject biosamples and accompanying personal and family cancer history data. Such data may help determine risks for cancer.

Clinical Chemoprevention Program - Cancer prevention and reduced risk programs tailored to individuals at high risk of developing cancer. These studies test the ability of various medicines to prevent cancer, aimed at blocking early steps in the process of carcinogenesis.

Breast and Ovarian Cancer Risk Assessment - Offers cancer screening expertise, information, support and counseling about genetic testing and cancer prevention options for individuals with a family history of breast and/or ovarian cancer and women who have had breast and/or ovarian cancer or a biopsy showing benign breast disease; also provides ongoing studies of the biological, genetic and environmental factors that influence disease risk. Contact: 1-800-325-4145 or 215-728-2795.

Gastrointestinal Cancer Risk Assessment - Helps men and women with a personal or family history of gastrointestinal cancer. Scientists at Fox Chase Cancer Center are working to determine the causes of gastrointestinal cancer, the best cancer screening methods and ways to prevent cancer. This program offers genetic counseling and testing services. Contact: 1-888-FOX-CHASE or 215-728-7041.

Prostate Cancer Risk Assessment - Provides prostate cancer risk assessment and screening to help detect tumors at the earliest, most curable stage and to help the next generation of men learn how to prevent prostate cancer. Our program helps men benefit from present and future knowledge about risks of prostate cancer. Contact: 1-888-FOX-CHASE or 215-728-2406

Melanoma Risk Assessment - Provides cancer risk assessment, cancer prevention and early detection of melanoma and complements our state-of-the-art services of staging and treatment.
