If you are concerned that a hereditary risk of cancer may run in your family, you may want to schedule an appointment with a genetic counselor.

The genetic counselor will draw your family tree and ask about the different cancers in the family and ages at diagnosis. The counselor will explain what you can learn from genetic testing and help you decide whether or not genetic testing for an inherited risk of cancer is right for you. Remember, only about 5-10% of all cancers are due to an inherited risk.

The Fox Chase Cancer Center Risk Assessment Program can help determine if your family is at risk. They will guide you through the genetic counseling and testing process and high risk screening, if appropriate.
