Cut-A-Thon Sheds Hair, Grows Funds for Research

Hair and make-up stylists at Salon Bella Gente, a local hair salon in Huntingdon Valley, Pa., opened their hearts to Fox Chase Cancer Center during the Valentine's Day season.

Stylists, including owner Cyndy Reed, and make-up artist, Ann Anderson, were available during the Hair Cut-A-Thon event on February 7. Haircuts, make-up sessions and waxing services were available at discounted prices.

This first-time event drew in $695, which was donated to cancer research at Fox Chase Cancer Center.

Florists Turn Misfortune Into Charity

Florists Turn Misfortune Into Charity

When this year's Valentine's Day snowstorm threatened sales at Plaza Flowers in Norristown, co-owners Chris Drummond and Heather Tuckey knew they had a potential problem on their hands. More than 50 varieties of flowers and thousands of stems were left in their refrigerators because customers were busy with the weather instead of ordering flowers.

The brother-and-sister team decided to turn their misfortune into something positive. They announced to the public that the leftover flowers were available for pick up in return for a small donation. All proceeds were donated to research at Fox Chase Cancer Center.

"We would hate to discard so many beautiful flowers, so we thought we could give them to people in exchange for a donation for cancer research," the florists said.

They gave away more than 11,000 stems and raised over $2,000. Drummond and Tuckey were pleased to organize the fundraiser in honor of their mother, who recently died of cancer. She was treated at The Cancer Center of Paoli Hospital, a Fox Chase Cancer Center Partner.

Prudential Fox Roach Chooses Fox Chase as Beneficiary

Since 2004, real estate agents from Prudential Fox Roach have contributed funds to Fox Chase Cancer Center through the Fox & Roach Charities. Each year, the agents contribute a percentage of their sales commission to the Fox & Roach Charities. Possible beneficiaries are selected from the tri-state area.

An advisory board reviews all charities and selects the recipients each year. Fox Chase has been fortunate to be a recipient for the past four years.

The Bryn Mawr agents participate in honor of their friend Connie Marder, who was treated at Fox Chase Cancer Center. From left in photo, Maxine Goldberg, manager of Prudential Fox Roach's Bryn Mawr office; Lisa Liacouras, Prudential Fox Roach Bryn Mawr Agent Charity Representative; Susanne Seeber, RN, MSN, director of Fox Chase's Lippincott Hospice Program; Linda Lowe, director of annual giving for Fox Chase's institutional advancement department; and Jan Schmidt, Prudential Fox Roach Bryn Mawr Agent Charity Representative, were on hand to celebrate this year's gift of more than $3,000.

As in year's past, this gift will be designated to the Lippincott Hospice Program at Fox Chase Cancer Center.
