Mission
The Behavioral Research Core Facility (BRCF) was formally established to provide a structured mechanism for integrating behavioral science into the broader science research activities conducted through the Medical and Population Science Divisions at FCCC. The BRCF mission reflects the goals of the NIH roadmap:
- To accelerate discovery in cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment - through a focus on behavior.
- To facilitate innovative behavioral research across the cancer spectrum, from disease risk and treatment to the promotion of health and well-being.
- To translate these efforts into clinical and community settings through sustainable partnerships.
Function
The BRCF helps peer-review funded investigators apply innovative theory-driven behavioral and social science research designs, measurements, data collection approaches, recruitment and retention strategies, and analytic methods into the planning, implementation, and dissemination of FCCC research endeavors. Description
The application of behavioral science and health communications best practices is vital to the success of research studies that require assessment of psychosocial constructs and biobehavioral correlates of stress; the integration of complex cancer-related information, counseling, and targeted/tailored health-related messages;recruitment and retention strategies; and community outreach models to form partnerships with diverse patient populations. The BRCF staff is uniquely qualified to provide these services, since they have the needed expertise in behavioral principles, behavioral science methodologies, and application and production of traditional and novel media approaches to cancer and health. These resources are readily available to all investigators who conduct whole organism research and who need to include behavioral science assessments of endpoints in their studies. Consultations are also available to FCCC clinical researchers interested in recruitment and adherence strategies, as well as to FCCC and Partners Program Managers interested in quality improvement and cost-benefit analysis of community programs (e.g., mammography clinics, smoking cessation programs).
