NCI Postdoctoral Training in Cancer Prevention and Control Research: Requirements

Core Requirements for Each Candidate/Individualized Training Plan

Each trainee is expected to:

  • Attend and participate in core curriculum lectures plus other research seminars conducted through the year at Fox Chase Cancer Center
  • Attend and participate in workshops on the responsible conduct of research, ethical behavior of investigators, seminars on HIPAA regulations and IRB regulations
  • Plan and complete a specialized education program relevant to the research and career plan. This may include attending week-long special courses, technical skill seminars, national leadership or research courses or enrolling in a Master's degree granting course of study
  • Develop with the mentors and implement at least one research project pertinent to the trainee's career interest and development
  • Write and submit a grant application for peer-reviewed funding. At the minimum, this includes an application for the ACS-funded institutional small grant program ($20,000-25,000 per award) that supports pilot studies; this application is reviewed by senior faculty using NCI criteria. Candidates are also encouraged to apply for NCI R03, R21 or K07 support, ACOS RPG or career development awards, and nationally competed, private foundation awards such as the V Foundation, Leukemia Foundation, Lance Armstrong Foundation.
  • Discuss research applications critiques with the mentors
  • Complete survey forms and meet with members of the Advisory Committee at least yearly
  • Continue providing updates on career development, especially after completing training period, to include publications, promotions, and honors
