CURE Student Scientist Program
Fox Chase Cancer Center

The CURE Student Scientist program offers students a great opportunity to work on current research projects in laboratories at Fox Chase Cancer Center (FCCC). Learning to do research is exciting, but it takes time and effort. The following requirements are not meant to intimidate you, but to give you a realistic idea of what is involved in being a CURE Student Scientist. If you are sure that you can meet all of the requirements, sign at the bottom and include this sheet with your application.

  1. You must be at least 14 years old and a Sophomore or Junior at the start of the 2008-09 school year.
  2. You must have completed a Biology course by September 1st, 2008.
  3. You must commit to participating in the program for TWO FULL YEARS. You will work in the lab for at least two hours each on two afternoons per week during the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years and for 8 weeks full-time (five days per week, 8 hours per day) in both Summers 2009 and 2010.
  4. _
    • You must have a reliable way to get to FCCC during the school year and in the summer.
    • Most mentors work 9-5 or 6, M-F so your four hours per week must fit into this time frame.
    • If you miss an afternoon or day, you must make it up.
    • We will do our best to accommodate sports or other commitments, BUT you must arrange it in advance with your mentor and you must make up the afternoons you miss. For example, if you can't come into lab for six weeks, you must make up the 12 afternoons you miss through an arrangement such as working three afternoons per week for 12 weeks during the rest of the school year.
  5. You must be available for one day of meetings in August 2008: for orientation.
  6. You must be able to meet with the Program Director and the other Student Scientists once a month during both school years and occasionally in the summers.
    • At one of these meetings you will report on your research project; at the rest, you must ask at least one question about your fellow Student Scientists' reports on their research.
    • You may miss one meeting to accommodate schedule problems. You must attend all other meetings.
  7. You must keep a journal documenting your research and thoughts or questions about your project.
  8. You must present your work in a poster session at FCCC at the end of both summers.
  9. You must provide current school transcripts by July 1 for 2008-09 and 2009-10.
  10. You must update your contact and other information on the Alumni Information web page as it changes or at least annually.
  11. Children of FCCC employees are welcome to participate but may not work in the same lab as a parent.

  12. I have read, understand, and agree to abide by the above requirements.
