Our 100-bed hospital, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is consistently ranked among the top cancer centers in the nation. Our nationally and internationally recognized staff provides consultations and treatment recommendations for all types of adult cancer.

Fox Chase Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit institution formed in 1974 by the union of American Oncologic Hospital (one the the nation's first cancer hospitals, established in 1904) and the Institute for Cancer Research (founded in 1927). Fox Chase was also among the first institutions to be designated a National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center in 1974.

A National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center

The National Cancer Institute (NCI), establised under the National Cancer Institute Act of 1937, is the Government's principal agency for cancer research and training. Fox Chase Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Cancer Center, this highest level of designation supports research, training, health information dissemination and other programs with respect to the cause, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cancer, rehabilitation from cancer, and the continuing care of cancer patients and the families of cancer patients. Honored for Nursing Excellence

In September 2000, the Hospital of Fox Chase Cancer Center became the nation's first comprehensive cancer center and Pennsylvania's first hospital to receive Magnet status for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, which renewed this honor in 2004 and again in 2009, making it the first hospital in Pennsylvania to have achieved two successful Magnet renewals.

Nobel Prize Laureates

Two Fox Chase scientists have won the Nobel Prize: Baruch Blumberg, for Physiology or Medicine in 1976 and Irwin "Ernie" Rose for Chemistry in 2004. Dr. Blumberg's work lead to the Hepatitis B vaccine, the first cancer vaccine in history. In addition to the Nobel, over the years Fox Chase researchers have won the most prestigious prizes for research awarded.

Top Doctors

Every year, Philadelphia magazine has highlighted Fox Chase Cancer Center physicians from a range of specialties in its May "Top Doctors" issue. The annual list of “Top Doctors” serves as an important standard for anyone seeking expert medical care in the Philadelphia area. It lists doctors who were selected among the region's best by a national survey of professional peers.
