December is a busy time of year for most people, but especially Tony Sundermeier, who serves as a church pastor. Still, five days after Christmas, Tony, who was 34, was scheduled for a vasectomy. During preadmission testing, doctors discovered microscopic traces of blood in Tony's urine. This was the first sign that 2009 might not be a "Happy New Year."

Carolyn Tonic-Robinson
Kidney CancerIn 2003 Carolyn Tonic-Robinson had a routine colonoscopy. She was 63 and was working full-time as a Special Education Teacher, turned Guidance Counselor. While she waited for her results of the procedure, Carolyn subconsciously began rubbing her left side. A co-worker asked her if something was hurting her.

Joe Weiss
Although not every 52 year old man has an annual blood test, Joseph Weiss certainly does. A diabetic, he is religious about seeing a doctor each year. In late August 2011, his urine test results revealed an elevated protein level, which raised some concerns. It was Labor Day weekend, but that did not stop his doctor from referring Joseph to a nephrologist, Dr. Zoller, for an ultrasound. Within 12 hours, Joseph learned he had a mass, which came as a big surprise.

Arhonda Williams
Arhonda La Rue Williams had given up hope. Diagnosed in 2011 with stage four renal cell cancer at the age of 46, this mother of three was in pain and felt that she was going to die, that there was no one who could help her. Three consults, including a doctor at a major university hospital, had left her despairing. But Robert Williams, Sr., her husband of 23 years, never gave up hope and throughout the journey he was right by her side.

Daniel Wolfson
Daniel Wolfson had always thought of cancer as an incurable disease that others unfortunately had to face. He never considered that a cancer diagnosis could happen to him. He never smoked, never drank anything alcoholic inclusive of wine, and his diet was pristine. He ran five to seven miles a day and completed an impressive 12 marathons.
