Radiation Treatment for Prostate Cancer Patient Stories

Who says cancer doesn't have to change your life? Arthur Silver, that's who.
In the spring of 2004, Art had slightly elevated PSA levels which prompted his urologist to perform a biopsy. Art had prostate cancer. His urologist recommended a therapy, which he could provide at a local hospital. Although this option would have been convenient for Art, he searched the Internet to learn more about prostate cancer treatment. What he learned was that he needed a second opinion.
"I always knew Fox Chase was the place to go for cancer."
Art recalled, "I always knew Fox Chase was the place to go for cancer. I went to their Website and found Dr. Horwitz, who was not only experienced, but had a nice, friendly face!" Art did not let the commute bother him.
"I would travel wherever necessary to get the best treatment."
Art and his wife, Rebecca, went to meet Dr. Eric Horwitz, Vice Chairman of radiation oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center. After reviewing Art's medical history and current diagnosis, Dr. Horwitz determined he was a candidate for IMRT (intensity modulated radiation therapy). IMRT is the most advanced form of external beam radiation therapy. It precisely targets and delivers higher doses of radiation with minimal side effects.
"As soon as our meeting was over, I decided to stay at Fox Chase for my treatment," said Art. He began what would be the first of 37 treatment sessions. After 7 1/2 weeks, Art's treatment was over.
"Fox Chase does some very good things."
"Fox Chase does some very good things," he explained. "It is patient-friendly, from the convenient parking, to the mission statement, to the efficiency of everyone. I never had to wait for an appointment. These little things mean a lot when you are being treated for cancer."
Cancer did not change the way he lives his life
Almost 4 years later, Art has not let cancer change the way he lives his life. In the winter, he is an avid skier and enjoys skiing with his children and grandchildren. In the other seasons, Art enjoys sailing, traveling to New York City and relaxing at the beach. And in his spare time, Art volunteers at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.
"I say if you don't check out Fox Chase, you're making a serious mistake."
His doctors at Fox Chase continue to monitor Art's health with annual check-ups and semi-annual PSA tests. "I'm a big fan of Fox Chase. I sent several friends there. Basically, I say if you don't check out Fox Chase, you're making a serious mistake," said Art.
"Because my treatment was successful, I have the ability to continue doing what I like to do. Having a great quality of life is very important to me," Art concluded.
